“Look up!”
Amid an onslaught of pins and kick outs in a fast-paced training drill, students are reminded to keep their faces up and looking out towards the camera.
Brookside’s School of Wrestling helps individuals from a variety of backgrounds: Men and Women of different ages from Leicester, Loughborough, London - even Beaumont Leys. A strong sense of camaraderie as handshakes and hugs are exchanged on welcome, fortified with every barking “set-go” drill like bonds made on military lines.
On the 5th of June 2016, students had a taste of something different by training with Bull James - formerly Bull Dempsey of NXT. Students stepped into the school’s new 18ft ring showing Bull their skills, receiving helpful feedback on strikes, selling, character and an insight into daily life at WWE’s world-renowned Performance Centre in Orlando, Fl.
“You have to feel it” he explained, tapping a finger to his chest. When he had the luxury of time – a rarity before NXT matches – Bull described camping out in a dark corner by himself for half an hour to find his inner aggression. Yet for comedy he would sit watching Laurel and Hardy with NXT Coach Robby Brookside and emulate aspects in the ring. “If it made Robby laugh, it would usually make the audience laugh as well!”
As the seminar closed with a large group photo in the ring, students took away a greater understanding of in-ring work, character, and some helpful advice on succeeding at a WWE Tryout. Please do feel welcome to get in contact and come along on Sunday. Brookside’s is open to all and is not an invite-only school - we would be happy to see you here!
